10 Translation Terms and Acronyms You Need to Know

#1 SL/TL: Source Language/Target Language

The Source Language (SL) is the "original" language you want to translate. The Target Language (TL) is the language you’re translating the text into. For example, if you’re translating from English to Italian, English is the SL and Italian is the TL.
With the same reasoning, there's also Source Text (ST) and Target Text (TT).

#2 MT and MTPE: Machine Translation and Machine Translation Post-Editing

Machine Translation (MT) uses computer software to translate text from one language to another. Machine Translation Post-Editing (MTPE) is when I, as a language specialist, review and edit the machine-translated output to ensure it’s accurate and meets the client's needs. This combo of tech and human touch makes translation quicker, although it's not suitable for creative texts or content intended for your clients. #3 CAT: Computer-Assisted Translation (Tool)

CAT tools, like Trados Studio and memoQ, help translators by providing translation memories, glossaries, and other aids. These tools make sure translations are consistent and efficient. They’re my sidekick!
Important note: they do not provide any machine translation, they are basically support software where I can operate.

#4 TM and TB: Translation Memory and Termbase

A Translation Memory (TM) is a database that stores previously translated text segments, which I can reuse in new projects to maintain consistency. A Termbase (TB) is a glossary of terms specific to the industry or client, ensuring accuracy in terminology.
These two resources are implemented in the CAT tool and are very useful while translating: is a specific sentence very similar to a sentence that has been translated before? Easy, the tool suggests results thanks to these two resources.

#5 HT: Human Translation

Human Translation (HT) is when the translation is done entirely by a skilled human professional, ensuring cultural nuances and context are accurately captured, providing a polished and natural-sounding translation.

#6 EOB/SOB: End of Business/Start of Business

End of Business (EOB) and Start of Business (SOB) refer to deadlines or start times based on business hours. These terms help in setting clear expectations for project timelines.

#7 PM: Project Manager

A Project Manager (PM) ensures the smooth running of translation projects. They're responsible for coordinating and managing deadlines of one or more specific projects.

#8 TMS: Translation Management System

A Translation Management System (TMS) partially automates the translation process as a whole, helping manage projects, track progress, and ensure timely delivery. It’s where you can keep an eye on the workflow and all the important information.

#9 SG: Style Guide

A Style Guide (SG) is a set of standards for writing and design that ensures consistency and quality across all content. It covers everything from grammar and punctuation to tone and voice, making sure the translated content aligns perfectly with the brand.

#10 LQA: Linguistic Quality Assurance

Linguistic Quality Assurance (LQA) is the process of reviewing and improving translations to ensure they meet high-quality standards. It involves checking for accuracy, fluency, and cultural appropriateness. LQA ensures your content not only reads well but also resonates with your target audience.
